Tywin was shrewd. He would have had the boy set right or put down. He likely would have had some ploy to make Joffrey better that would have involved the memory of Robert's prime. Joffrey wanted nothing more than Robert's approval, and to use that against Joffrey seems right up Tywin's alley.

When the Lannister King realized the battle was lost he retreated and knelt to Aegon. He could just as easily have been proud and arrogant and died in the battle; probably wiping out the Lannisters. So while it couldve gone better for the Lannisters throughout history, it could also have gone a lot worse.
